Not For Me, No Thanks
I was reading this article from the New York Times about the future of the digital book and I am so NOT sold on this. One of the reasons I prefer reading over other forms of entertainment such as television and movies is because I get to imagine...I see in my mind what characters look like, sound like, walk like, etc...I see the settings. I don't want a computer to do that for me. As I've experienced from movies and t.v. - it's never as good! I don't need a contraption to entertainment. I'm perfectly content doing so myself. My attention span is pretty darn good when it comes to reading, thank you very much.
So, please leave me to my beloved print books and my highly creative imagination. We're all good!

He thinks books are one dimensional? Clearly he's been missing the point all these years. Or else...I refer you to my first sentence.
I don't mind new avenues of technology to deliver content. But, I want it in addition to, not in place of what we have now. It comes down to choice--I definitely don't want how I take in content to be dictated to me. I appreciate the Internet when it delivers authors and their ideas/writings who might not make it through the print publishers.
Of course, for some of them, there is a reason they can't get published ;-). And, there are times the Internet medium seemingly mandates changes that can end things as we (insert generation here) have known them. If you recall from Star Trek II, Spock gifts the book A Tales of Two Cities to Kirk for his birthday. I just hope he gave that because of the greatness of the work, and not the rarity of the printed book.
I am a fan of the new digital books for a few reasons, but most importantly because it's easy access for me to be able to purchase english books from where I am currently in the world.
I still like to have the books lined up on my shelf, but they seem now like a more decorative purpose, like this is a sense of who i am. I read, therefore i have lots of books. I think reading on the Kindle loses some of those aspects.
It's like how the itune sales are increasing, and things like CDs are cumbersome.
I have come to accept how many songs i can store in one tiny usb drive, as opposed to the clutter of like 10 cds. maybe i will feel this way about digital books as well... for now, they serve a purpose for me of easy and quick access.

I don't have anything against the electronic book. I will probably one day own a reader myself...once the cost isn't so high and the technology so new, etc. What I didn't like about this particular concept is the way they seem to be making video games out of the books. I don't need someone else's interpretation of things spelled out for me. I just need the words!
